Beyond the Scale: The Founders of Revive Clinic Are Changing How We Think About Weight Loss

spot_imgspot_img

By Daine Taylor

Denisha Cuffee never planned on opening a wellness clinic. Despite spending more than two decades in healthcare—serving as an ICU nurse, military officer, family nurse practitioner, and later earning certification as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner—she suddenly found herself facing a deeply personal struggle that no amount of clinical experience could prepare her for.

For years, she struggled with endometriosis, navigating hormonal changes that affected her body in ways that were difficult to understand and even harder to manage. During IVF treatment, those changes intensified, and she gained more than 40 pounds. Soon after, she experienced the emotional upheaval of divorce, and the combination of hormonal shifts, grief and declining self-confidence left her feeling disconnected from the person she once knew. Like many of the patients she would later care for, Cuffee learned that weight loss wasn’t simply a matter of eating less or exercising more—it required healing emotionally as much as physically.

Seeking help, Cuffee turned to longtime friend and family nurse practitioner Shakedia Pope, who specialized in medical weight management. Under Pope’s guidance, she combined weight-loss medication with healthier nutrition, increased physical activity, and lasting lifestyle changes—all while completing her psychiatric mental health training and working through one of the most difficult chapters of her life.

The results of her wellness transformation extended far beyond the number on the scale. Cuffee lost more than 80 pounds and, more importantly, gained a renewed sense of confidence, purpose, and perspective.

“I felt like I was revived. I was reborn. After I lost the weight, I had a better mindset,” Cuffee says. “I felt good. I loved myself. I felt like I had better confidence than I’d ever had in my life.”

That transformation became the foundation for Revive Clinic, a telehealth practice serving patients throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Together, Cuffee and Pope set out to challenge a long-held assumption in healthcare—that weight loss can be achieved through willpower alone. Instead, they built a practice around a different belief: lasting wellness begins by treating the whole person, recognizing that mental health, physical health, and sustainable weight management are inseparable.

A Shared Vision for Better Care

Having specialized in medical weight management since 2020, Shakedia Pope had spent years helping patients navigate obesity with evidence-based treatment plans. She knew that while medications could be powerful tools, they were never the entire solution. Long-term success depended on understanding each patient’s medical history, lifestyle, emotional well-being, and the habits that shaped their relationship with food.

When Cuffee came to her as a patient, Pope approached her no differently than anyone else seeking help. Together, they built a plan that combined weight-loss medication with nutrition, accountability, increased physical activity, and sustainable behavior changes. The results were life-changing. Cuffee regained the confidence and emotional resilience that had been overshadowed during one of the most difficult periods of her life.

As Cuffee’s personal journey unfolded, she recognized something that had long been missing from traditional weight-loss care. While Pope was helping patients manage the physical side of obesity, Cuffee’s psychiatric training revealed how often anxiety, depression, emotional eating, trauma, and low self-worth stood in the way of lasting success.

Founded in January of 2026, Revive Clinic reflects the belief that meaningful transformation isn’t achieved by changing a number on the scale alone—it’s built by providing personalized care for the whole person, inside and out.

Long before they founded the clinic, both Denisha Cuffee and Shakedia Pope built their careers caring for patients in some of healthcare’s most demanding environments. Cuffee served as an ICU nurse and commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force before expanding her expertise into oncology, primary care, and psychiatric mental health. Pope’s experience spans intensive care, post-anesthesia recovery, and years specializing in medical weight management.

“It just fit like a puzzle,” Pope says. “I was the seasoned weight-loss provider. Denisha was the testimony, and she brought the mental health component. All the puzzle pieces came together.”

Rather than treating weight management and mental health as separate disciplines, the longtime friends envisioned a practice where both were addressed together.

Beyond Diet & Exercise

Traditional weight-loss programs often begin with the same prescription: eat fewer calories, exercise more, and, increasingly, consider medication, however, the clinic’s founders believe they only address part of the equation.

“A lot of times people come in wanting to lose weight, but they’re battling depression, anxiety, or low motivation,” said Cuffee. “When we improve their mood, they’re more willing to get outside, move their bodies, and believe they can succeed.”

For Cuffee and Pope, the first question isn’t “How much weight do you want to lose?” It’s “What’s standing in your way?”

The answer is often more complex than diet alone. Years of emotional eating, childhood habits around food, financial hardship, food insecurity, chronic stress, trauma, depression, or deeply ingrained behavioral patterns can all shape a person’s relationship with eating. Without addressing those underlying factors, even the most effective diet or medication may fall short of delivering lasting results.

That philosophy also shapes how the pair view obesity itself. Rather than a lack of willpower, they see it as a chronic disease deserving the same evidence-based care as other long-term medical conditions.

“If someone has high blood pressure, we don’t just tell them to eat less salt—we also give them medication,” Cuffee explains. “Obesity deserves that same level of treatment and support.”

It’s a perspective that has become increasingly relevant as GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy and Zepbound dominate headlines and social media. While public debate often centers on whether these medications are a “quick fix,” Pope and Cuffee believe the conversation misses the bigger picture.

“The biggest misconception is that people are cheating,” Cuffee says. “They’re not. These medications are tools—not shortcuts—and they work best when they’re combined with nutrition, exercise, education, and behavior change.”

Revive Clinic: A Total You Transformation

At its core, Revive Clinic is not defined only by the treatments it provides or the outcomes it helps patients achieve. It is defined by the relationships built along the way. Every patient brings a unique story, a different set of challenges, and a personal journey that deserves to be heard.

The goal is not to judge where someone has been, but to support where they want to go and empower them with the knowledge and tools to get there.

Revive Clinic was created to be a place where patients feel comfortable being honest about their struggles, asking questions, and taking the next steps toward a healthier future.

“We’re here for them,” Cuffee said. “We’re not judgmental. We’re here to walk the journey with them.”

Ultimately, Revive Clinic’s approach challenges a long-standing misconception about weight loss. Success isn’t measured solely by pounds lost, but by helping patients understand the emotional, behavioral, and medical factors that influence their health—creating a foundation for change that lasts long after the number on the scale begins to fall.
