Moore<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cAffordable, accessible, and equitable health care is the foundation on which we build everything else \u2013 from safer neighborhoods to more vibrant communities. Together, in coordination with our federal partners, we are honoring our commitment to creating a healthier state and leaving no one behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br>\u201cMaryland\u2019s participation in the AHEAD Model is a critical step forward in improving the overall health of its residents, supporting primary care, transforming health care in communities throughout the state, and addressing disparities in the health care system,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cCMS applauds Maryland\u2019s leadership in slowing health care costs while driving innovation and improving health care delivery for Marylanders.\u201d<br><br>The AHEAD Model supports the delivery of high-quality care through greater care coordination and focus on health equity and health-related social needs to support underserved patients. The model builds upon the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/links-1.govdelivery.com\/CL0\/https:\/hscrc.maryland.gov\/Pages\/tcocmodel.aspx\/1\/01000192e876b4c3-ca928093-1209-4d7f-ac51-ac009dba4c59-000000\/B_4srh2YRMb_qaOCGRxKZuq5-gDu3VKxq8OJcvl76uA=377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Total Cost of Care Model<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0which sets a per capita limit on Medicare\u2019s total cost of care in Maryland and\u00a0encompasses Maryland&#8217;s unique\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/links-1.govdelivery.com\/CL0\/https:\/www.cms.gov\/priorities\/innovation\/innovation-models\/maryland-all-payer-model\/1\/01000192e876b4c3-ca928093-1209-4d7f-ac51-ac009dba4c59-000000\/6OAr4gW1AfWjfiOUqmYlTOphKNICcPUIuYkxsvwt61Y=377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>all-payer hospital payment system<\/u><\/a>, which reduces\u00a0per capita hospital expenditures and supports improved health outcomes as encouraged by the Affordable Care Act.<br><br>Implementation of the AHEAD Model will begin January 1, 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hwfmagazine.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-20-at-12.46.16-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-740\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><br>\u201cFor nearly 50 years, Maryland has worked to champion healthcare innovation, so that every Marylander has access to high quality health care. Through collaboration with state and federal partners, the launch of the AHEAD model provides an opportunity to build on this legacy and continue to deliver for Marylanders. We must continue our commitment to health equity and use this new system to work towards the elimination of long-standing health disparities,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said U.S. Senator Ben Cardin<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cTeam Maryland must work to ensure that this update to our all-payer model continues to make health care more accessible and equitable while maintaining Maryland\u2019s unique system.\u201d<br><br>\u201cMaryland is the first state to enter into this innovative partnership with the federal government to achieve our triple goal: quality, affordable, equitable health care for every Marylander,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWe look forward to implementing this AHEAD model to build a healthy future for all.\u201d\u00a0<br><br>\u201cUnder AHEAD, Maryland has more tools and resources than ever to create a health care delivery system that Marylanders deserve,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Laura Herrera Scott<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWith a focus on improving access to primary care and addressing population health needs of Marylanders, under AHEAD we will expand upon the work initiated by the Total Cost of Care Model.\u201d<br><br>With the signing of today\u2019s agreement, the Maryland Department of Health will begin planning for model implementation with stakeholders.
